Before the pandemic, it is probably fair to say that textile printing was one of those things that we had all considered at some point. You might even have considered direct-to-garment printing including T-shirts, sportswear and short-run fashion designs.

Following Stephen Woodall's appointment as Global Market Segment Manager for Aqueous & Solvent Digital at Nazdar Ink Technologies earlier this year, he gives his insight into trends in the signage and graphics market. Based in Stockport, Stephen Woodall works closely with regional managers in territories across the globe and Nazdar's UK- and USA-based R&D teams. He says that currently Nazdar is actively working with channel partners who want to specifically target markets and expand their customer network.
“The Nazdar 130 Series inks, our alternative to the Mimaki SS21 inks, have been a very popular addition to our product range, but recently we've also seen greater uptake of Nazdar 203 Series inks, which are a high-quality, more affordable alternative to ECO-SOL MAX 3 inks," he comments. "Like all Nazdar's alternative ink ranges, these two products are a close physical match in terms of performance, adhesion, colour vibrancy and outdoor longevity.
"Over the coming months I expect to see continued stability in the signage and graphics market, with demand remaining strong for exciting new products and greater efficiencies helping businesses to reduce their spend while retaining quality. A growing number of people are finding that a changeover to Nazdar inks is painless and trouble-free with no obvious difference except the cost.
"Everyone is looking for ways to reduce their overheads without reducing their quali-ty, which is not a new development, but we are seeing the impact now in the form of increased interest in our free ink cartridge campaign
"Nazdar has an ongoing programme of supplying an ink cartridge free of charge to graphics, packaging and industrial printers to be trialled in conjunction with their OEM inks. While we've always had good uptake in the UK and USA, at present we're seeing an increased interest from other geographic regions. The campaign offers the opportunity to try out Nazdar inks risk-free, which growing numbers of print businesses seem inclined to do.
"Furthermore, these ink cartridges are provided to each customer by their local resellers who know the market and can provide tailored advice and any support they might need. Customers aren't just receiving a single ink cartridge through the post; they're building a relationship with a fellow local company with whom they can work in the future. This reflects a wider trend of people preferring to invest in local, independent businesses and receiving more personal customer care."

Nazdar, comprised of Nazdar Ink Technologies, Nazdar SourceOne and Nazdar Consulting, announces the retirement of its President, Michael Fox, effective the end of 2017.
Nazdar Ink Technologies has released a new set of solvent inkjet inks, developed for long-lasting, high-quality output from Roland wide-format printers.
Promoted at this year's FESPA show, Nazdar 203 Series inks are formulated as direct replacements for Roland Eco Max 3 original inks, but at a lower price point. They are accurately colour-matched to OEM inks in CMYK plus Light Cyan, Light Magenta and Light Black, and can be used in conjunction with Roland Eco Max 3 white and metallic inks.
In addition to the colour vibrancy provided as standard with Nazdar inks – which are manufactured in the UK and USA – the new low-odour Series 203 inks offer superior performance on outdoor graphics and are resistant to UV degradation and colour fade. The range is ideal for commonly used graphics substrates including banner material, flexible and pressure-sensitive vinyl, blue back paper and backed mesh, delivering consistent and reliable print performance even on high-speed printers.
"We promoted the new inks at FESPA in Hamburg this spring and we're delighted to now roll them out to wide-format print businesses across the UK," says Stephen Woodall, Global Market Segment Manager for Aqueous & Solvent Digital. "The high impact, high intensity colours offered by the new Nazdar 203 Series inks are equivalent to the OEM ink set but without the high price tag.
"Nazdar inks are formulated to match specific OEM inks, so print businesses can be assured that a quick ink changeover is all that's required to save them money without losing quality. The only difference their customers will see is lower prices."
Thanks to compatibility with both the ink shades and with all Roland printers engineered to Roland Eco Max 3 inks, the new Nazdar 203 Series cartridges can be installed simply when the old OEM inks run out, either singly or as a full set, without the need for custom profiles in most situations.
The new inks – available in 500ml cartridges and 1 litre bottles – are manufactured to ISO9001 standards and meet all the regulatory targets achieved by Eco Max 3 OEM inks.

Jaymar Packaging says a switch to alternative inks from Quality Print Services (QPS) has brought new life to its flatbed printer, which had sat as 'a very expensive piece of metal' after clogging problems.
Quality Print Services (QPS) has reported a very successful three days at the NEC for Sign and Digital UK 2017.
Quality Print Services (QPS) will return to Sign and Digital UK from March 28th to 30th 2017 where its stand (J12) will feature the highest quality wide-format and dye-sublimation printing technology and inks.
Quality Print Services (QPS) has seen an increase in sales of its most easy-to-use alternative inks, suggesting a trend of UK sign and graphics companies looking to improve workflow efficiencies in the print room.
In particular, Chris Bailey, Director of QPS, says he has experienced a surge in print businesses choosing Nazdar 705 series ink, developed as a direct replacement for the HP FB 250 series inks for HP FB500/700 printer platforms. As it is a plug-and-play system, a new Nazdar 705 ink box is simply fitted directly behind an empty OEM box quickly and easily, with no requirement to flush or re-profile the RIP software and therefore no ink is wasted.
The Nazdar 705 series ink also offers excellent durability: its resistance to the effects of UV degradation and fading make it ideal for long-term outdoor use and its superior adhesion helps to resist edge chipping and peeling on both flexible and rigid materials, including challenging substrates such as fluted polypropylene and composites.
Nazdar 702 series ink, formulated as a direct replacement for Océ IJC256 series inks used on Océ Arizona printer platforms, and Nazdar 130 series ink, a true colour-match for the original Mimaki SS21 ink set, are also proving popular. Nazdar 130 is low-odour and is available in 2 litre bulk bags, compatible with the Mimaki Bulk Ink System, for even greater cost- and time-savings and efficiency. Both offer intense colours and excellent resistance to damage on printed output, even for long-term exterior applications.
"Across the sign and graphics industry we're seeing an increase in customers looking for products and equipment that is easy to use, both on a day-to-day basis and when they are first installed," says Chris Bailey.
"Margins are tighter than ever and downtime is not something print businesses can afford. Our plug-and-play alternative inks are fitted in seconds when needed – and with many formulations available in bulk options, operators can spend even less time preparing to run printers."
Bailey adds: "Our alternative inks are developed by Nazdar for specific printing systems to ensure equal or better quality, reliability, colour intensity and durability than OEM inks, but at a lower price point. It is no longer acceptable for reduced costs to be associated with reduced quality and printer reliability."
Furthermore, Nazdar inks are fully supported in the field by QPS's renowned team of engineers, so on rare occasions when customers encounter a problem QPS ensures they are back up and running with as little downtime as possible.
"Customers are demanding their ink and equipment service choices tick every one of their boxes, which Nazdar inks from QPS do," says Chris Bailey.

At a time when recycling is making headlines, Quality Print Services (QPS) is celebrating five years since the launch of its cartridge recycling scheme.
QPS introduced the free programme for its customers in 2011 – long before the 5p carrier bag charge was introduced and campaigns began to call for coffee shop chains to recycle their cups.
The end-to-end cartridge recycling programme was developed in partnership with ink brand Nazdar to minimise the signage and graphics industry's generation of landfill waste and its environmental effects. QPS began collecting empties when delivering new ones or while visiting customers as part of its renowned printer service support.
To further reduce road miles, the recycling process is kept local to QPS's HQ in Burscough, Lancashire. Any remaining ink goes to a nearby solvent recovery centre while separated cartridge components are sent to a reprocessing plant in the north of the county, where they are ground down and reprocessed into clean chips for resale to UK plastics manufacturers.
In the past twelve months alone, QPS has collected around 3.5 tonnes of plastic cartridges and saved them from going to landfill.
As well as reducing their environmental impact, this means QPS's customers don't have to worry about disposing hazardous materials or finding space to store their empty cartridges as they build up.
"Five years after launching our ink cartridge recycling programme we remain one of the only suppliers to offer this service to our customers," says Chris Bailey, Director, QPS.
"More and more print buyers are demanding environmental action from their print providers and we can offer help in this area free of charge. What's more, our customers who sign up for the recycling programme will receive certification of their involvement, which can help support an application for ISO 14001."
He adds: "Our industry creates a vast amount of waste, far too much of which ends up in landfill. It's up to all of us to help reduce that, but we make it as easy as possible for our customers."
QPS also champions British business – the majority of the Nazdar wide-format ink it sells is made in the UK – so is proud to contribute to the British circular economy by providing recycled plastic chips for re-manufacturing into new products.
All QPS customers who take regular deliveries of Nazdar ink cartridges are eligible for the programme. For more information about the campaign or QPS's large-format print products and services, please email sales@qualityprintservices.com or call + 44(0)1704 897575.

Impact Sign Solutions says Nazdar 702 Series inks have helped it meet 'mission critical' demands for colour accuracy. The 24-year-old Buckinghamshire-based sign making firm prints signs for small and large businesses, museums, schools, colleges and high-street shops – where advertising for high-end cosmetics and watches has to be precise.
"We create our own colour profiles to ensure our colours are accurate – we perhaps place more importance on this than other businesses – and have found that Nazdar 702 Series inks are certainly compatible with that ethos," says Andy Borrow, Managing Director, Impact Sign Solutions. "Colour is mission critical for us."
Impact Sign Solutions has been running Nazdar 702 Series inks on its Océ Arizona 250GT flatbed wide-format printer for around six months, having had problems with the inks initially installed on the machine, which were from another manufacturer. Research on finding a replacement alternative ink led to Nazdar and its distributor Quality Print Services (QPS) Ltd.
"Nazdar is widely known – people always talk about their products at Sign and Digital UK and so on – and has a very good reputation," says Andy Borrow. "The Nazdar 702 Series has been really good since the switchover and we've had no problems at all. In the future we're definitely planning to move our other printers over to Nazdar digital inks."
However, the Impact Sign Solutions MD is safe in the knowledge that if a problem were to occur with Océ Arizona 250GT, Lancashire-based QPS would provide technical support straight away.
"The QPS engineer who installed the Nazdar inks on the Océ Arizona 250GT was a breath of fresh air: comprehensive and competent, explained everything thoroughly and gave training and tips to the team as well as dealing with the machine itself," he says.
Chris Bailey, Managing Director, comments: "Nazdar inks are specially formulated to provide a top-quality, reliable, colour-matched formula for specific printing systems at a lower price point than the OEM product. The Nazdar 702 Series inkset for Océ Arizona printer platforms is no exception and therefore an ideal choice for businesses like Impact Sign Solutions that have customers who demand vivid, true-to-life colours and densities.
"We certainly don't anticipate any issues but our UK support team is available should Impact Sign Solutions ever need it."
Andy Borrow concludes: "Honestly, it's a relief to find a team like QPS that both supplies the excellent Nazdar inks we need and supports the machine – it's the way business should be."
Nazdar will be showcasing the Nazdar 702 Series inkset alongside Nazdar 703 Series and Nazdar 705 Series inks – all designed for the UV plug-and-play inkjet market – at FESPA Digital 2016 from March 8th to 12th.
"Our new UV inkjet inks are designed to be direct replacements for the OEM inks, while offering significant savings to the end user," explains Rich Dunklee, Nazdar's Global Market Segment Manager for UV Digital Inkjet Inks. "Impact Sign Solutions has discovered the benefits of using Nazdar 702 Series inks on its Océ Arizona 250GT: reliability, colour accuracy and, thanks to QPS's renowned customer service and technical expertise, a complete support package."
QPS will also demonstrate a range of Nazdar inks on stand L10 at Sign and Digital UK 2016 from April 19th to 21st 2016.

Nexvision completes a successful Christmas period after installing a second Roland VersaEXPRESS RF-640 running Nazdar TX-650 dye-sublimation inks, supplied by QPS.
Quality Print Services (QPS) has agreed its largest ever stand for Sign and Digital UK, taking place from April 19th to 21st 2016.
"We've already booked our stand space for Sign UK 2016: an eye-watering 72sqm," says Chris Bailey, Managing Director of QPS. "We normally reserve a large space near to the show's main entrance but this time we wanted to make sure we had even more room to showcase the wealth of equipment we supply, in particular the Longier flatbed printer range."
QPS, in collaboration with Longier UK Ltd, distributes the Longier wide-format printer brand. It installed its first Longier Hunter FP3750 LED flatbed printer this July, at WAE Group's Leeds print room.
At Sign and Digital UK 2016, QPS will be demonstrating the Longier Hunter FR3750, another of Longier's energy-efficient and robust LED UV printers, capable of high-quality, low-energy printing at speeds of up to 70sqm/h. The 2x8 print-head configuration allows for printing with process colours, white and varnish while an oversized board printing option is also available. The Hunter FR3750 will be running Nazdar high-quality digital inks, of which QPS is the leading UK supplier and main distributor.
"Users running the combination of Longier Hunter printers and Nazdar inks have found excellent adhesion to the widest variety of commonly used sign and display substrates, long-lasting prints and outstanding performance. This is the reason Longier UK Ltd uses Nazdar ink as the OEM ink," says Chris Bailey.
"In addition, we'll be demonstrating a range of smaller wide-format printers running Nazdar products, with full details to be announced closer to the show."
As an Authorised Roland Dealer for dye-sublimation and UV applications, QPS's stand at the 2015 edition of Sign and Digital UK featured a Roland RF-640 with Nazdar TX650 dye-sub inks and a Roland VS-640i with Nazdar 202 inks, plus a preview of Nazdar's dedicated, low-odour inks for Mimaki JV300 and CJV300 series printers. Since then, QPS has also announced it will supply Nazdar's brand new UV-cured inkjet inks – Nazdar 702 Series and Nazdar 703 Series – for the Océ Arizona and Fujifilm Acuity printer platforms.
QPS will exhibit on stand L10 at Sign and Digital UK 2016. Full details will be announced in due course.
