  • Oakdene Designs grows with Roland DG technology

    Roland Ben Grist LEF LFR

Ben Grist, founder of Oakdene Designs, first came across Roland DG printers whilst at college and knew from that moment he wanted to own one of his own. An entrepreneur at heart, at the age of 17, Ben started his first business, manufacturing high end chicken coops. He soon invested in a Roland DG GX-24, the predecessor to the GS-24 Desktop Cutter, allowing him to produce custom-made stickers for the coops. The desktop printer required a low initial investment and this, coupled with Ben’s prior knowledge of the machine from college, made the GX-24 the perfect choice for the newly launched business.

Wanting to diversify and expand, Ben explored the applications possible available using the versatile Roland DG machine and was able to start a new business producing and selling wall stickers and prints through well-known commercial retailer websites such as ‘Not on the High Street’ - and in 2012 Oakdene Designs was born.

Juggling a product design course at Bournemouth University with his new business venture, Ben made the decision to leave university in his final year of studies to fully concentrate on his design company which was growing month by month. The business was run out of a small studio at the end of his road in Brockham, Surrey alongside his 3 members of staff to keep overhead costs at a minimum. The decision proved to be the right choice as Oakdene Designs achieved a turnover of 60k in its first year.

As the operation grew from strength to strength, Ben was keen to diversify into new and exciting markets and so he invested in a Roland DG GX-500 from the CAMM-1 PRO GX Series. Much larger in size than the GX-24 desktop cutter, the powerful vinyl cutter combined with an aqueous printer gave the team the opportunity to create a more diverse variety of products including canvases, decorative signs, adhesive wallpaper murals and larger wall sticker sets.

Looking to streamline work processes, and further increase the business offering, in 2014 Ben also invested in a Roland DG SOLJET PRO 4 XR-640 wide format inkjet printer/cutter. Having the print and cut facility in one machine meant that Ben and his team were able to maximise efficiency to produce high-volume, high-quality products on demand. Soon after, Oakdene Designs introduced a more creative product range to include personalised printed photos, signs and larger bespoke canvas.

Commenting on the rapid expansion, Ben said: “As business started to pick-up I knew I needed more than a desktop cutter. The GX-24 had been a great first investment and given us the chance to find our feet and understand where we wanted to be in the market. The addition of the two new Roland DG machines meant we could expand on our vision to offer an exciting range of bespoke decorative products.”

In 2016 the small team of eight full-time staff members were selling high-volume specially made-to-order decorative products on the web in the UK and worldwide and had reached an annual turnover of over one million in four years. Determined to remain competitive and maintain the level of growth the business has achieved, Ben, who is always thinking of new ideas and design opportunities, came across the Roland DG VersaUV LEF-300 UV Printer. The UV inkjet flatbed printer could take Oakdene Designs productivity to the next level and offer the flexibility of digital customisation and personalisation, which was a growing market trend that Ben was keen to exploit. Without any delay the LEF-300 was soon part of the Oakdene Designs family and not long after its arrival, the business was able to expand its product line accordingly.

The UV printer was able to print directly onto a wide range of substrates, allowing Oakdene Designs to create a larger range of unique decorative items to include bamboo decorations, illuminating photos, street signs and transparent photos. Built to meet high-volume demands, the UV printer provides a consistent high-quality finish even during long production runs.

“The addition of the LEF-300 gave us the ability to print onto a larger variety of materials including wood, fabric leather and acrylic, all without a primer. We have remained successful at Oakdene Designs because we are constantly thinking of new and innovative designs that no one else has done before, and using our Roland DG machines, we have been able to produce some really exciting stuff,” Ben added.

With personalisation at the heart of Oakdene Designs’ success, the Brockham-based business is looking forward to the future and have hopes to one day take creativity to new heights with the purchase of a Roland DG LEJ-640FT, the newest addition to the Roland DG UV range.

“I knew from the minute I first started working with Roland DG machinery at college that the machines were something I wanted to work with forever. The ease of use, versatility and power are incomparable and have been an essential element to the success of the business. At Oakdene Designs we have succeeded by combining our Roland DG machine capabilities together to create new and innovative products. By continuing to do this we will carry on providing our customers with the high-quality products that they have come to expect. All that’s stopping us is our imagination!”

  • Group101 stages a grand entry into direct-to-textile print

    MTEX Group101 picC LFR

Wide format print and signage specialist Group101 has expanded its offer thanks to a recent investment in an MTEX 5032Pro direct-to-textile printer - and it’s using the printer to not only deliver new soft signage solutions, it’s also creating ‘trussing’ for stages at gigs and festivals, and fabric backdrops for theatres.

If the company’s history was written into a play, this latest investment would be the fourth act since it was started up as a canvas printer by chief executive James Sahota in a very small bedroom seven years ago. Its quick growth meant the company moved into a production facility after around a year, then nine months later they moved again into bigger premises and introduced more large scale signage machines including a CNC cutter.

After another move they finally settled into a 10,000 sqft facility in August 2015 which also now houses their new MTEX 5032Pro, installed just before Christmas.

James said: “While we started out serving both trade and direct customers, we’re now a trade-only supplier, working mostly with signmakers, other printers and range of design agencies. It’s a great arrangement as it means our customers know that we’re not a competitor for their business and we can work together with our clients to develop new applications to meet their customers’ requirements.”

With the MTEX 5032Pro, Group101 is now able to print directly onto a range of textiles including Airmesh vent fabric (for fencing banners, cafe barrier graphics, crowd control railing graphics, building wraps, banners, displays, exhibition graphics, point of sale signage and so on), backlit fabric, blackout display fabric for where zero light shine through is needed, and stretch fabric for display frames.

James added: “The MTEX 5032Pro is a totally different beast from your standard wide format printer. It’s a bit like the difference between driving a car and flying a plane - there are more factors to consider than when you’re just loading a roll of vinyl or a board, such as  how the material behaves, and the effects of heat, tension and torque. It was a massive learning curve, but when the penny finally dropped I just had a big grin on my face.”

James and a couple of his operators have learned to operate the printer, and while they offer a range of products, the most popular are the stretch fabric display frames.

James explained: “The stretch fabric display frames and pop ups are like a sock you pull around the frame - and they can have a massive impact at up to 6 x 3m. We do the finishing too so we supply a complete solution, with bespoke display shapes if requested.

“With the fabric we use customers can wash the material at 30 degrees to keep it clean and the displays can be packed up and carried over your shoulder in a bag similar to a rucksack. At the other end of the scale we can also now produce theatre backdrops on fabric rather than a foamex board, with a 15-20m seamless graphic that companies can fold up and put away.

As a fairly small and approachable team we build up a trust with our customers which means they’re able to get us involved as a consultant at the start of a new project and ask us what we can do to help them deliver the best solution for their client.

“Thanks to our new soft signage solutions the MTEX is becoming a firm favourite with our network of trade clients. With our exceptional prices, a comprehensive knowledge of all things print and state of the art finishing department, it’s no wonder our trade fabric printing department is growing month on month.”

  • Nazdar collaborates with VFP Ink Technologies to bring digital inks to French market

    Nazdar VFP LFR

Nazdar has collaborated with French screen ink manufacturer VFP Ink Technologies to supply a co-branded range of digital ink products to print businesses in France.

As a subsidiary of Tripette & Renaud Group, established in 1836, VFP's core business is manufacturing decorative and functional screen inks for industrial applications, such as bank cards, adhesive labels and printed electronics. In 2015, it reported turnover of €25m (around £20m) and employed 160 people, covering the whole French market.

In addition, VFP's products for laminated plastic cards are sold in the USA by Nazdar, through an exclusive partnership agreed four years ago. A collaboration between the two companies in France therefore happened naturally, according to VFP Sales Director, Sébastien Petit.

"When we learnt that Nazdar was looking for partners to develop its digital inks market share in France, it was for us a good opportunity to bring an added value to our existing offer to our customers," he explains.

The co-branded products are manufactured by Nazdar and sold under the recognised VFP Ink Technologies name in order to reach customers in France as quickly and smoothly as possible.

"The partnership was very important for us because the market in France is aware that VFP Ink Technologies does not produce digital inks, yet Nazdar is well known in that industry – we could not start with a better digital inks partner than Nazdar," Sébastien Petit says.

"Nazdar provides high-quality products at a very competitive price level – they really are the best alternatives to OEM on the market – which of course is beneficial for our customers, who want to save money without the quality of their work being affected."

He adds: "As many of our customers are equipped with Mimaki and/or Roland printers, we decided to focus on providing Nazdar plug-and-play solutions specifically developed for those printers."

VFP therefore supplies Nazdar alternatives to ECO MAX, ECO MAX2, SS2 and SS21 OEM inks in 440ml cartridges, which can be installed as the original containers run out without the need to recalibrate the machines.

"We're delighted to partner with VFP Ink Technologies," comments James MacDonald, Vice President of Marketing at Nazdar. "VFP Ink Technologies has extensive expertise in the screen inks sector and is incredibly well connected across France and beyond, so can offer great support for new and existing customers. In return our experience in developing advanced digital ink formulations will open up the market for VFP Ink Technologies."

The partnership was officially announced at C!Print in Lyon in January 2016.

  • Blooming marvellous 'living painting' from PressOn

    Press On Flowers 1

PressOn has helped its client, the Flower Council of Holland, create a giant 35 square metre installation described as a “living painting” using digital print and 26,500 real flowers. The work was commissioned to celebrate the support of Funnyhowflowersdothat.co.uk, an initiative of the Flower Council for the Dutch Flowers exhibition at the National Gallery that runs until 29 August 2016.
The artwork was erected outside the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square, London on 2 June 2016.

PressOn was approached by Chanel de Kock, UK Marketing Manager for the Flower Council of Holland, in early May to help. It was a challenging request - to create a 6.2 metres tall by 4.6 metres wide piece of digital print that when covered with real flowers, would recreate a Dutch Master painting by artist Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder. The painting is entitled ‘A Still Life of Flowers in a Wan-Li Vase’ (1609-10).

Nigel Webster, joint MD of PressOn explained the technical aspects of the project: “We needed to create a printed template that would sit on floristry foam to act as a guide for the florists adding the real flowers. Our initial thought was to use a paper that could be pulled out once the flowers were added, so we tested one that would easily disintegrate when very wet.  The timing of the disintegration was too unpredictable though for us to guarantee the print would stay intact for long enough so the florists could see the painting.

"Finally we settled on wet strength blueback paper, printed with HP Latex inks on our HPLX3500. We made around 30,000 slits using our Kongsberg XP Cutter to enable the flowers to be added. Once held vertically, the paper held water inside the floristry foam longer than anticipated, which was great news.  We printed 12 sections in total to wrap the floristry foam. Another section of the painting that was not covered in flowers was printed on canvas to help withstand the weather and then added over the top of the other covered sections. I went to see the finished work and it was just breath taking.”

Almost 30 florists teamed up to create the fresh flower masterpiece, many of whom were volunteers recruited at the Chelsea Flowers Show. The teams worked through the night in a London studio to create the masterpiece. (see a time lapse video courtesy of Funnyhowflowersdothat.co.uk of the creation of the masterpiece here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTbuxwR1QDA&feature=youtu.be).

Chanel de Kock of the Flower Council of Holland added: “I’d like to thank PressOn for their great work, their relentless attention to detail and dedication that helped us complete this very successful project. People visiting the Gallery from the UK and around the world will be able to see these paintings brought together in one room, and also have the chance to experience a very special kind of bouquet.”

  • COVERUP gets creative with Mimaki

    CoverUp LFR

When Dublin-based COVERUP wanted to upgrade its trusty Mimaki CJV30-130, the company went straight back to Mimaki and invested in the latest generation JV300 solvent printer. Now, as well as producing high-end graphics and print jobs, it’s been able to get its innovative, experimental hat on and devise a whole new way of producing canvas awnings.

COVERUP in Dublin was established around 40 years ago, manufacturing and finishing covers for boats, cars and more. In the late 90s, the company expanded its services by providing printing in-house and eventually made the transition to digital print 10 years ago, arming itself with a selection of grand format hardware for flag and fabric printing. However, in order to secure its comprehensive service portfolio, it made the investment in a Mimaki CJV30-130 integrated solvent printer/cutter, offering high end window vinyls, pull-up banners and stickers.

The company was so impressed with the machine that it opted for Mimaki once again when it came to updating its hardware, as Operations Director, Anthony Byrne explains: “We have always been impressed by the quality of the print produced using the Mimaki CJV30 and made the decision to invest in a new Mimaki JV300-160 solvent printer along with a matching CG-FXII cutter in order to retain that high-end, wide-format side of our market. The JV300 is extremely fast and the colour we get from the SS21 ink is unrivalled. We needed the extra speed and now we have a separate cutter we can simultaneously run two different jobs.”

In addition to the more commonplace applications, COVERUP has experimentally found a great use for the new Mimaki JV300: producing print for canvas awnings, the kind popular in al fresco eating areas and trendy cafés. Byrne continues: “We produce a lot of work for places requiring branded awnings and windbreakers etc, but it’s impossible to print direct to rolls of acrylic canvas. So, we developed a process of printing and cutting onto cast vinyl followed by a heat transfer process onto canvas and it produces a great effect, similar to screenprinting. Using solvent inks makes the colour vivid and the overall effect is very striking.”

The investment was made through authorised Mimaki reseller, Reprocentre, as its Sales Director, Eoin Honan explains: “COVERUP has been a Reprocentre customer for some time and we have been delighted to supply, install and support a new Mimaki JV300 into the company.”

Further information about COVERUP is available via its website www.coverup.ie.

Further information about Reprocentre and its products and services can be found at www.reprocentre.ie.

  • Epson increases production to meet demand following drupa success

    Epson drupa LFR

Epson has reported significant orders across its range of printers from companies visiting its booth at drupa.

“We have had a very successful show,” says Duncan Ferguson, Executive Director, Professional Printing & Robotics, Epson Europe. “This was Epson’s biggest ever showcase for our most complete range of inkjet printers for prepress, signage, photographic, textile and label applications. The stand was extremely busy with huge interest from visitors from around the globe and we are delighted with the high number of significant orders generated.”

Interest in the new SureColor SC-S signage range of printers was so high that Epson has increased production in order to keep up with the surge in demand. The show launch of Epson’s new 44-inch SureColor SC-P10000 wide-format printer was a resounding success with sales of 10 machines, including one to Picto in France which will be installed alongside their three 64inch SC-P20000s already onsite.

Exhibited at drupa, the SurePress L-6034VW digital label press attracted significant attention with orders from around Europe - the show press is being delivered to Print-ID in Germany and the first in the UK was sold to Superfast Labels. The SurePress L-4033AW press proved popular too with a number of global sales made, including the US and Dubai.

Within the print shop zone, Epson showed how its desktop solutions could enable companies to offer a collaborative design-and-print service to produce a wide variety of personalised products on a vast range of substrates. • What do Lamborghini and Roland DG have in common?

    roland veneno

Currently vaunted as the world’s most expensive hypercar, the new Lamborghini Veneno will set you back a cool £2.8 million – or you might prefer a new Bugatti Veyron Super Sports at £2 million. For those wanting to buy British, how about the Aston Martin One-77? It’s a snip at only £1.15 million.

For those not so well-endowed in the trouser pocket, there’s always the option of starting out on your personal road to riches by investing the comparatively paltry sum of £9,999 on a Roland DG VersaExpress RF640 eco-solvent printer.

But what is it exactly that the aforementioned items of illustrious hardware have in common?

You might be surprised to discover that the entry level price point of the Roland belies the fact that – just like the Lambo, the Veyron and the Aston – the Roland DG printer is assembled entirely by hand.

In fact, the Roland can possibly lay claim to having the advantage in the hand-made one-upmanship stakes; whilst the cars mentioned above will be assembled by a variety of production line workers with a range of particular skills, the Roland printer is entirely hand-assembled by one single technician. That’s right – every single Roland DG printer is assembled from the ground up by just one individual person within the manufacturing team.

Using a manufacturing concept known in Japan as D-Shop or Digital Yatai, the whole Roland DG assembly process is directed by a step-by-step computer animation which guides the operator to the next action. Parts carousels are also PC-connected ensuring the correct part is selected. All screwdrivers are connected to the same system so that the correct pre-set torque setting is applied to every single screw.

This Digital Yatai process reduced printer manufacturing failure rates at Roland DG to exactly zero overnight. Yes, you did read that correctly: manufacturing with zero defects.

    yatai

A Roland worker making an industrial printer follows prompts on the computer (1), pulling pieces from the rotating parts rack (2) and using digital screwdrivers (3) with a preset number of turns and torque.

Assembly completed, that same Roland DG technician subsequently signs the printer. This creates an indelible audit trail that will forever identify that technician as being responsible for any production-related woes that might befall that printer during its working life. You simply do not find that degree of buck-stops-here accountability in manufacturing these days – not even if you buy a £2.8 million Lamborghini Veneno.

Yet this assembled-by-hand production methodology – normally associated with low volume and high cost product – does not stop Roland DG producing outstanding product in sufficient volumes to meet the quotas required for worldwide printer sales. Volumes so impressive that InfoTrends recently reported Roland DG as the “World's Number One Seller of Wide-Format Printers” for the durable graphics market in 2015.

Low cost, high quality product, produced in volume. That’s quite a demanding set of criteria – and perhaps even unique to Roland DG and its forward-thinking production methods.

Not content to rest on its laurels, Roland DG still today continues to streamline its Digital Yatai production processes. New technologies have been implemented to automate a number of simple assembly operations, allowing employees to focus on more complex tasks requiring manual dexterity and a human touch.

By combining state-of-the-art technology, innovative manufacturing processes and an individual’s human touch, Roland DG really has transformed its production processes to create a winning formula.

  • Senfa appoints HVG Graphics Media as sole Australian distributor of Decoprint

    Senfa HVG LFR

Alsace, France-based Senfa has appointed HVG Graphics Media as sole distributor of its Decoprint range of products for the Australian market.

Decoprint, the inkjet division of Senfa, has rapidly developed a presence in Europe and overseas with its high quality printable textiles for large format and super-wide applications. Its flagship product, Pearl, has become the reference for indoor backlit displays in Europe. However, the Decoprint range now also includes fabrics suitable for frontlit and speciality applications printable on all the main platforms (UV-curing, Latex, Solvent and direct and transfer sublimation).

In 2015 Senfa invested 8 million Euros in a new 5 metre wide coating line vastly increasing production capacity and also catering for a segment of the market in need of wider media.

HVG Graphics Media, a division of the Halifax Vogel Group, has been increasing its presence in the Large Format Digital sector and in the last seven years has opened new sites in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide while also expanding its Sydney distribution centre.

    Senfa Decoprint

“We are a distributor of premium products for Visual Communication,” explains Richard Lucas – Business Manager of HVG Graphics Media. “ With Senfa-Decoprint, we see a range of products that fit seamlessly into that category. The large-format digital print market is moving towards textiles for various reasons. Textiles are certainly more environmentally friendly and easier to transport than PVC banners and vinyls but the main reason people are moving over to textiles is that they simply look great, especially when used in conjunction with LED smart backlit displays.”

“The time is right for expanding into new markets and we are delighted to have HVG Graphics Media on board as our sole distributor,” says Colm Garvey - the Senfa Area Sales Manager. “I recently visited Australia and I was impressed by the professionalism of the HVG Graphics Media team. The Decoprint Pearl is already quite well known in Australia as several printers have contacted us wanting to know where they can purchase it locally.

"HVG Graphics Media will be a one-stop shop for the Decoprint range. We manufacture high quality products and we will be well represented by HVG. They are present nationwide which is a huge advantage in a country as vast as Australia. I also saw a trend towards higher quality images, especially inside airports, shopping malls and hotels. We see no reason why the year on year growth experienced in Europe cannot be reproduced in Australia when print-houses see the benefits of printing onto textiles – now available up to 5 metres wide – and stocked locally by HVG”.

  • Senfa announces plans for FESPA Digital 2016

    Senfa Decoprint

Alsace, France-based Senfa will be present at FESPA Digital 2016 in Amsterdam from 8th – 11th March and the main message this year will be “going wider – now up to 5 metres”.

In November 2015, Senfa opened a multi-million Euro 5 metre coating line to cope with increased demand for this width.

Decoprint, the inkjet division of Senfa, has rapidly developed a presence in Europe with its high quality printable textiles for large format and super-wide applications and its best selling product, Pearl, has become the reference for indoor backlit displays.

“We have 2 main objectives at FESPA Digital 2016”, says Blaise Humphries – Business Unit Manager at Decoprint. “We want to communicate to our existing customer base that our 5 metre production line is now successfully up and running and we also want to search for new customers in new territories and demonstrate the benefits of printing on textiles for indoor applications. People see that images printed on textiles basically look better than images on PVC or paper. Textiles add a certain “je ne sais quoi” to the message or advertising campaign which cannot be achieved with other media – not to mention the smaller environmental impact of textiles. And for printers the advantages are obvious – textiles are easier to handle, cheaper to transport and general contribute higher margins to the business. The Decoprint range has products for all the main print technologies namely solvent, UV-curing and latex printers as well as direct and transfer sublimation.

"FESPA is an excellent platform for us as it attracts a highly international visitor base. Visitors who come to the Senfa-Decoprint booth (Hall 1, stand G32) will see a full 5m x 5m backlit display showing the true impact of super-wide textiles.”

  • SENFA reinforces Export Department with appointment of Colm Garvey

    Colm SENFA LFR

France-based SENFA, part of the Chargeurs Group of companies listed on the French Stock Exchange, has announced the appointment of Colm Garvey as Area Sales Manager, responsible for the development of new business in a variety of international markets including the Middle East, South Africa and Australia. Colm has more than 20 years’ experience in the large format digital printing industry, and previously worked for the likes of Neolt and Uniform.

Colm joined SENFA on 1st January 2016 from CSL Digital (formerly Colorific Solutions Ltd.) where he held the position of International Sales Director. In this role, he was instrumental in the development of international sales for Colorific’s range of alternative ink solutions for the digital printing industry.

His main focus at SENFA will be developing international sales reach for SENFA’s Decoprint® collection, a wide range of speciality coated fabrics made up of synthetic or natural fibres for inkjet (solvent and UV inks) and transfer printing (sublimation). He will be based in the Alsace region of France where he has lived with his family since 1998.

Printer manufacturers have been quick to recommend Decoprint media as a high quality super-wide backlit and frontlit solution. The media is ideal for both super-wide UV-Curing and Latex print technologies (as well as solvent).

The combination of Decoprint®’s base fabrics and a high tech coating process ensures that the substrates offer better ink penetration and excellent print quality. SENFA’s Decoprint® is suitable for a wide range of applications for the indoor and short term outdoor markets.

On Colm Garvey joining SENFA, Blaise Humphries, the Decoprint® Business Unit Manager, comments: “With year on year growth very positive, and a new coating line becoming operational, we decided it was a good time to reinforce our export department. We are well established in the larger European markets but we see great possibilities for growth in many more markets. Colm will become instrumental in the development of these opportunities.”

Colm Garvey adds: “When the opportunity of joining a local company active in the large format digital printing industry came along it just seemed the right match. The industry has been crying out for more environmentally friendly solutions – and that’s precisely what Decoprint® offers.

“In the coming months and years, I believe that many printers will move from PVC-based products over to textiles, and SENFA Decoprint® provides an ideal solution. Innovation and quality are the two cornerstones of European manufacturing, and Decoprint® by SENFA ticks both those boxes.

“I’m really looking forward to the opportunity of developing the business in new regions.”

  • SmartLF SG voted SGIA’s “Scanning Product of the year”

UK distributor, ArtSystems, has proudly announced that the Speciality Graphic Imaging Association’s (SGIA) prestigious Product of the Year Competition for Scanning Product of the Year was awarded to Colortrac’s SmartLF SG.

A total of 141 entries were submitted for this exclusive competition which was conducted during the 2015 SGIA Expo in November. Judges said this year’s event was “one of the most challenging in recent history”.

Held in Atlanta, USA, the award was announced to some of the leaders of the specialty imaging industry. ArtSystems’ Sales Divisional Manager, Ted Freer, was enthusiastic about the award, which he said was very well deserved.

“We believe the Colortrac SmartLF SG is the best wide format scanner in its field and this award proves that the SGIA agrees with us. The range offers superior graphics, crystal clear lines and the fastest thick media adjustment on the market, we have every reason to be very proud of this product.”

Ray Weiss, SGIA’s Digital Specialist, said, “We are really thrilled with the participation from exhibiting companies, and we even doubled the product categories to correctly acknowledge all of the possible technical accomplishments honoured in this competition. The award winners have been extremely enthusiastic about their wins, understanding just how competitive the field was this year.”

Fastest ever Colortrac CCD HD wide format scanner

The SmartLF SG series of large format scanners uses the same charge-coupled device (CCD) sensor technology found in professional quality cameras. It will scan thick media in HD up to 1200 DPI and up to 36 or even 44 inches wide.

Instant-on LED lights mean no warm up and no waiting around, and the SmartLF SG range scans all types of paper and mounted documents. It provides super-easy adjustment for different media thicknesses up to 15 mm, and is suitable for:
    •             Hi-Fidelity colour reproduction for scanning and reprographics service professionals
    •             High Speed Technical Imaging within AEC, CAD, Mapping and GIS
    •             Electronic Document Capture (TWAIN)

There are three SmartLF SG high definition large format scanner models in each size (36in or 44in) with performance levels and features optimised for different applications.

If operator requirements change, the m (monochrome/greyscale) and c (colour) models can be easily remotely upgraded to a higher level using a simple emailed scanner upgrade tool. The e (enhanced) upgrade offers the highest colour scanning speed. Monochrome/greyscale scan speeds are identical across all upgrades.

Ted Freer concluded: “Colortrac has created an instant classic with the SmartLF SG series by providing these scanners with a range of specifications that set the benchmark in their marketplace. The SGIA judges reinforced everything we have been saying about these machines, they are simply world beating technology.”

  • New Mimaki TS500P-3200 to target home furnishing textiles and indoor soft signage markets

    Mimaki TS500P 3200 printer LFR

Mimaki will be launching its new TS500P-3200 super-wide format inkjet printer in February 2016. The 3.2m-wide roll-to-roll sublimation inkjet printer is a dedicated transfer paper printer for the textile industry and is ideal for a broad range of applications including home furnishing textiles and indoor soft signage.

Exclusively distributed in the UK and Ireland by Hybrid Services Ltd, the Hybrid's National Sales Manager for Textile & Apparel, Stephen Woodall, says: “We’re seeing the trend for on-demand textile printing develop from the fashion and sportswear markets into the interior décor and home furnishing sector. The benefits of digital print enable companies to deliver variable content in varying run lengths with very short lead times; thus capitalising on the technology.”

He continues: “Personalisation works best when coupled with short lead times for the consumer, so another key factor is having a print operation located geographically close to its market, thus bringing manufacturing back to the UK & Ireland.”

The super-wide format TS500P-3200 inkjet printer, ideal for transfer printing on furnishings and display graphics fabrics, features a new type of printhead to deliver high-speed printing at 180sq m/h. There are 12 printheads arrayed in three staggered lines that eject ink droplets at high speed to maintain the appropriate ink droplet angle and ensure accurate drop placement with a high head gap. This ensures high-quality printing results on low-cost thin transfer papers.

Mimaki’s Advanced Pass System 4 (MAPS4) anti-banding function smooths the swath boundaries with reduced numbers of droplets to provide even more beautiful printing. In addition, the newly designed Auto Media Feeder (AMF) allows stable transfer paper feeding at the high-speed setting in order to maintain print quality.

In addition, the environmentally friendly output does not emit volatile organic compounds after printing and when considering large expanses of display graphics or retail PoS, it helps reduce CO2 emissions during transportation because it is lightweight and foldable.

The Mimaki TS500P-3200 delivers a number of production benefits. Its 3.2m super-wide printable width is practical for sublimation transfer printing on extra-wide fabrics for curtains, bed linen, and other home furnishings and with printing speeds of 180sq m/h is highly productive too. A new printhead and feeding mechanism ensure high speed and quality printing on 3.2m wide media, which thanks to its AMF*3 is capable of feeding media up to 3.2m wide and 130kg and in weight.

Mimaki’s cockling-reduction transfer mechanism supports high-speed production on wide papers and the high performance TxLink3 Lite RIP software allows users to specify the ink volume per colour, and produce large seamless patterns from a single image (including repeat and mirror patterns).

Uninterrupted printing is aided by the Nozzle Check Unit (NCU) that automatically detects and cleans clogged nozzles while the Nozzle Recovery System (NRS) uses only good nozzles as substitutes, when the clogged nozzles are not recovered after cleaning. Large ink containers in the external ink supply unit support continuous printing.

Woodall remarks: “The TS500P-3200 should make a real impact in these markets, thanks to its combination of high tech performance and innovative features. As Mimaki’s dye sublimation and textile printing line-up continues to expand apace, we’re seeing machines that offer solutions for every aspect of the sector.”

The interior decoration market is undoubtedly a growing one, as Woodall concludes: “The increase in demand for bespoke and short run interior textiles – be it for furnishings, décor or display graphics – is showing no sign of abating. Mimaki is focused on meeting the requirements of this market and the new TS500P-3200 provides the capability to deliver to an increasingly wide variety of needs.”

  • Atlas Packaging praises 'Zünderbar' new Zünd plotting table

    Zund Atlas LFR

Devon-based corrugated packaging specialist Atlas Packaging has installed a new Zünd G3 L2500 digital cutting table from Zünd Plotting Systems (UK) Ltd – describing the machine as a 'Zünderbar' piece of equipment.

Established in 1983, Atlas Packaging is one of the UK's largest independent corrugated companies, providing a complete packaging service to a range of different industries including food and drink, horticulture, automotive, pharmaceutical, furniture and events, and counting businesses such as Waitrose, Asda, and Interflora amongst its customers.

Atlas Packaging converts 30 million sqm of raw material to high-quality finished products every year and previously relied on an older plotting table that it was 'quickly outgrowing', it says. Zünd UK took away the former machine through its extremely successful part-exchange deal, replacing it with a new Zünd G3 L2500. Atlas Packaging also formerly used a Wild Table 10 – a brand supplied by Zünd in the 1980s-90s – which Atlas Packaging says remained reliable for a decade, adding weight to Zünd's reputation for quality and robustness.

"The plotting table is used by our in-house structural design team to create high-quality prototypes which are sent to clients to review, ensuring that the product is perfect before it is approved for full production," explains Dave King, Structural Design Manager at Atlas Packaging.

"We chose to invest in Zünd due to its outstanding reputation for quality, and we were confident that the state-of-the-art Swiss-built machine would enable us to transform our output. The compatibility with our chosen software, Artios and Cape, was also a factor we needed to consider, as this now gives us the ability to render 2D diagrams into 3D prototypes.

"With our new machine and software we hope to push our design skills even further and explore new avenues."

In around 2007, Atlas Packaging's managing director and design manager visited Zünd's St Albans demonstration centre and decided the plotting table on display was an investment for the future. They kept an eye on the Zünd G3 as it was continually improved and upgraded via the numerous videos available online, and opted to purchase the Zünd G3 L2500 though the part-exchange deal when the time was right.

In that period, Zünd's demonstration suite has also been updated as a dedicated, modern space for one-to-one technology showcases, open days and industry events.

The Zünd G3 digital cutting series is designed for maximum automation of cutting and trimming work, with a solid build quality for 24/7 operation. It can handle materials up to 50mm thick and, like all Zünd machines, is offered with an extensive yet straightforward range of modules, tools and material-handling options that can be altered or retrofitted to adapt to each user's needs.

"Our part-exchange scheme proved very popular last year, enabling businesses with old and inefficient plotting tables from other brands to upgrade to a new Zünd at a lower cost," says Peter Giddings, Sales Director, Zünd Plotting Systems (UK) Ltd. "As Atlas Packaging has found, the Zünd G3 L2500 is ideal for sample-making and short-run production purposes, providing accuracy, reliability and efficiency where it is most needed."

Following its installation, Dave King adds: "It is an incredible piece of machinery, propelling us forward with outstanding efficiency – Zünderbar!"

For further information on Zünd digital cutting equipment or to book a visit to its demonstration centre, please email sales@zund.co.uk or call +44 (0)1727 833003.

  • HEXIS UK announces premium solvent-free HFLEX 100P film for hot transfer applications

    HEXIS HFLEX 100P jumpers LFR

HEXIS UK Ltd., the exclusive UK distributor of HEXIS S.A.’s full range of films and media for professional signage, vehicle marking, visual communication and surface protection applications, has announced a new premium solvent-free film for hot transfer applications – HFLEX 100P.

The 90µ premium opaque solvent-free cast polyurethane film is suitable for application onto pre-washed cotton, polyester and Lycra and is ideal for the printing of designs onto sportswear, T-shirts, hats and much more. It is also OEKO-TEX®-approved for children’s wear and babies’ clothes.

Backed with a 100µ matt clear PET self-adhesive liner to enhance the ease of positioning, the premium water-based polyurethane film is both solvent and odour-free (no VOCs). This innovative, thin, flexible and stretchable face film offers excellent cutting and weeding characteristics, even on lettering as small as 3mm or the most complex of designs, and will not tear during weeding or application.

HEXIS UK Ltd.’s Managing Director Scott Wilkins comments: “HFLEX 100P is a great addition to our range of products for textile decoration. This high quality film is available in a wide gamut of colours – with more being added on an ongoing basis – and has a true anti-reflection matt finish, similar to that achieved by traditional screen printing.”

He continues: “Application is simple: you simply cut a mirror image of your design and weed after cutting. Then, position your design and use a heat press to transfer the design onto the garment of your choice. It really is that straightforward.”

HFLEX 100P does not wrinkle on garments and ensures constant quality and colour stability. The finished printed and pressed products can be washed at up to 60°C and ironed at temperatures of up to 160°C.

  • Mimaki's visualisation of all things print kicks off in 2016

    Mimaki TS500P 3200 LFR

Mimaki has a full show schedule planned for January 2016. The company will be exhibiting at no less than three major trade shows, each focusing on its own specific field of interest, the first of which is Heimtextil, the largest international trade fair for home and contract textiles. Heimtextil is scheduled for 12th to 15th January at Messe Frankfurt, Germany. Mimaki will be located in Hall 4.0, Stand F15.

The company also has a presence at PSI Düsseldorf; the leading international trade fair for the advertising industry. Hosted by the Promotional Product Service Institute, PSI 2016 is scheduled for 13th to 15th January at Messe Düsseldorf, Germany, where Mimaki will be in the Technology Forum, Stand 12B13 TF.

Finally, Mimaki will be exhibiting at Salon C!Print Lyon, France, scheduled for 26th to 28th January; a show perfectly tuned to the evolving needs of the printing market, which requires creativity and innovation. The Mimaki team will be inspiring attendees at Stand 2K12/L11.

"No time to rest on those mistletoes come 2016," says Mike Horsten, General Manager Marketing EMEA at Mimaki Europe. "All three shows are important venues to showcase Mimaki’s broad range of solutions for the printing and visual communications industries, from textile printing to signs & display graphics and promotional items to general commercial print applications. We’ll be out in force at all three shows to inspire attendees with new digital solutions poised to transform their businesses."

Digital textile printing: A growth market

At Heimtextil, Mimaki will have a full product line-up on display, with solutions that make it easy for visitors to expand their digital textile printing capabilities or implement new ones, printing vibrant, durable colours on a broad range of materials. Visitors will experience the TS500P-3200, a 3.2 metre concept printer that prints on transfer paper with sublimation ink alongside the Mimaki TS300P-1800, a 1.8 metre printer that also prints on transfer paper and will be shown using brilliant pink and yellow fluorescent inks, much in demand especially in the sports garment industry.

Mimaki will also show the TX300P-1800, a 1.8m printer that prints directly on textiles with disperse dye ink, enabling printing directly on polyester, as well as with textile pigment inks for printing on cotton - which proved to be a smash hit at the recent ITMA 2015 show. In addition, Mimaki's JV400LX, using CMYK, Orange and Green Latex inks will be printing wallcoverings with a stunning colour gamut.

"Digital textile printing has evolved past simply printing samples or one-offs,” Horsten adds. "Designers and manufacturers can take advantage of the Mimaki textile printing family for short to medium production runs of unique fabrics for a variety of uses, from home decoration to fashion to industrial. Visitors to our stand are sure to be impressed by the opportunities these printers generate.” Horsten will also be presenting at the European Digital Textile conference on January 12th at 11am in Hall 4.0 on “The new supply chain for super-fast home textiles.”

Stephen Woodall, National Sales Manager – Textile & Apparel for exclusive UK and Irish Mimaki distributor, Hybrid Services Ltd comments, “Heimtextil is an important international show and the range of Mimaki printers on display demonstrates our very latest solutions for the home furnishings and printed textile sector.”

    Promotional printing reinvented

At PSI 2016 in Düsseldorf, Mimaki’s printer and cutting plotter portfolio will take centre stage. Manufacturers of promotional items will find unique solutions that enable printing on three-dimensional items and a wide range of other promotional materials. These include the brand-new UJF-7151plus, which will also take the limelight at C!Print Lyon. It is the next generation model of the world’s best-selling UJF Series line from Mimaki and its design and technologies enable sign, speciality graphics, and award and personalisation companies to realise the benefits of digital printing with higher margins and lower production costs, without compromising quality.

Also at PSI is the JFX200-2513 LED UV flatbed printer ideal for signs and display graphics that prints on a wide range of substrates with a choice of inks, including white and clear. It’s easy to use and has a compact footprint to fit into almost any production space.

Mimaki will also demonstrate the UJF-3042HG, including the Kebab option to enable printing on round surfaces and cylinders, a table top flatbed printer that can print on a variety of substrates, including plastics, metal, wood, leather and glass in sizes up to 30cm x 40cm.

Stuart Cole, National Sales Manager – Industrial Products at Hybrid remarks, “There are three different UV-curable ink types available, plus white and clear, and these address a huge variety of printing needs. On-demand printing of promotional items is just one of the successes of the UJF Series and the exhibition is an ideal opportunity to highlight this to prospective customers.”

In addition, the Mimaki CFL-605RT compact flatbed cutting plotter will be on the stand and is the ideal complement to Mimaki digital printers. This 50cm x 60cm cutter supports on-demand production with multiple functions including reciprocating, tangential and eccentric cutting, plus creasing for immediate finishing of packaging and prototypes.

“Our Kebab option is always a big hit at trade shows, especially in the promotional items space,” Horsten explains. “It opens up a variety of brand-new options for manufacturers of promotional items that were not previously available. We are looking forward to showing off the applications, along with the rest of our portfolio, at PSI 2016.”

PLUG&PLAY SVP at Salon C!Print Lyon

At C!Print, Mimaki will once again participate in the event’s PLUG&PLAY Creative Workshop with its JFX200-2513, an affordable, high performance UV LED flatbed printer also being shown at PSI 2016. The purpose of this project is to demonstrate how companies can display their visual identity in temporary locations including pop-ups, combined with multichannel communications. In addition, Mimaki will be showing the UJF-7151 plus direct-to-object production flatbed printer and the UJF-6042 flatbed printer with the CFL-605RT compact flatbed cutting plotter. The Mimaki UJF-3042HG with the popular Kebab option will also be available to view.

Mimaki also intends on showing the TS300P-1800, printing on transfer paper for fabric applications and featuring yellow and pink fluorescent inks. "We will also have all four of our latest solvent printers at the show,” Horsten concludes, "The JV300, JV150, CJV150 and CJV300. This broad array of solutions ensures that we will have something for everyone, and we look forward to welcoming visitors to our stand.”

  • Large format Epson-printed artwork wins ACE Award

    Epson ACE Award image LFR

A stunning piece of contemporary art installed on the west wall of St Michael’s Church, Camden, ‘HS’, has won the ACE Award for Art in a Religious Context. Designed and created by artist Maciej Urbanek, the large-scale artwork measures more than 60 sqm and was printed using an Epson large format printer and media.

The ACE Awards were set up in 2003 to draw attention to standards in religious art and design and celebrate the successes and diversity of architectural and artistic projects in religious buildings throughout Britain. The winners of the 2015 Awards were announced at a reception held in the remarkable setting of King’s College Chapel, London.

A graduate of Goldsmiths College and the Royal Academy of Arts, Maciej is currently Photography Tutor at the Royal Academy Schools, while still developing his art practice producing large-scale printed works. He was introduced to Epson within the RA Schools’ Epson Digital Media Suite and has used Epson materials and equipment since he was a student so knows the technology well.

“Epson were very generous in offering me the use of their print facility at Hemel Hempstead in order to produce the 27 pieces that make up the installation,” says Maciej. “Not only did they provide their facilities but also their expertise. It simply wouldn’t have been possible without their help and support.”

The large scale photographic work impressed judges with its ‘drama and theology’ and its ability to ‘speak mysteriously and powerfully’. Maciej says: “I’m delighted with the finished piece and the fact that it has created a focal point for the whole community to enjoy. I’m also very happy it has won the ACE Award!”

  • Roland DG shows new SOLJET EJ-640 and Texart XT-640 printers at Viscom

    Roland DG SOLJET EJ 640

Roland DG unveiled two brand-new printers at Viscom in Düsseldorf. The SOLJET EJ-640 eco-solvent large format printer (pictured above) and the Texart XT-640 sublimation printer (shown below) were presented for the first time at a European fair and visitor feedback was very positive. The new ink, ECO-SOL MAX 3, also received good reviews from the attending Roland customers.

Premières at the Viscom Dusseldorf fair

Viscom Düsseldorf was the first European trade fair to present the new Roland DG printers. These premières gathered an interested crowd to the Roland-stand.

The SOLJET EJ-640 was launched a few days before the start of the exhibition. The EJ-640 is developed for the production of large volumes of high-quality prints. For this purpose the printer is equipped with two staggered print heads and has a built-in triple heating system. The device is solidly built and uses the new EJ ink in 1 litre cartridges (available in configurations with four or seven colours). The EJ-640 guarantees low cost use and high productivity.

On the first day of Viscom Düsseldorf, Roland DG also announced the launch of the Texart XT-640 sublimation printer. The XT-640 was designed specifically to create colourful fashion and sports wear. The printer has two print heads and a workable print speed of 41 m2/u. The printer works with Texart ink that was developed especially for textile printing and has bright, lively colours and deep, rich hues of black. The orange and violet inks expand the colour spectrum and add exceptional red, orange, deep blue and purple hues. Light cyan and light magenta guarantee subtle nuances, wonderful skin tones and impressive details.

Advantages of the new ECO-SOL MAX 3 ink

At the show, Roland DG also spent a great deal of time on informing visitors of the advantages of the new ECO-SOL MAX 3 ink. The ink dries quicker, is available in larger cartridges, has a lower ink price per cc and offers overall better performance.

ECO-SOL MAX 3 is not only delivered with the new printers. People who are using older model Roland printers can use the ink as well. A simple conversion of the device is all that is needed, you will find the instructions at the Roland DG website*. The required conversion kit is currently free. In this way Roland DG also makes the newest developments available to its existing customers for which the company received a lot of positive reactions.
