Ever wanted to turn a sideline into your main, profit-driving day job? The Vinyl Guys did just that, putting their faith in Roland DG print & cut technology to launch their business into high quality, high reliability production that never fails to impress their customers.
The Vinyl Guys started their route to business success with just a PC and a small 60cm plotter cutter to produce graphics for friends as and when required. Anything larger than the size of the plotter, or that required print, had to be outsourced on demand.
Alex Liggett, Owner of The Vinyl Guys, explains: “I started The Vinyl Guys business as a hobby three years ago, to meet the growing needs of friends in the motorsports sector. Initially, I outsourced all my printing whilst doing as much as I could with the plotter and cut vinyl at home.”
The West Midlands-based company opted to purchase the TrueVIS SG-540 print & cut machine in 2016 after falling in love with the latest of Roland DG’s eco-solvent printers at The Print Show earlier in the year. They purchased their first in-house machine from Grafityp, opting for the SG-540 as a fantastic way to save time and increase profits.
Alex says: “The printer has been pivotal in transforming my sideline enterprise into a profitable business. The difference now is unbelievable. I can print samples, test my artwork and turn work around faster, at a higher quality and at a lower cost. As soon as we installed our Roland, our profit margins grew by a significant amount overnight. Customers also noticed the difference in terms of quality, which meant I could be more creative and offer additional print services.”
In addition to increasing the quality of output and consistency of print, the SG Series printer also enabled Alex to expand what he could offer his customers, meeting tight deadlines, offering exciting custom work and even expanding the types of product he can offer beyond the high-quality vinyl and vehicle wraps which the company is known for. After seeing how successful bringing their business in-house can be, The Vinyl Guys also purchased a laminating system, allowing every stage of the vehicle wrap process to be completed in-house to their high standards.
Alex continues: “As my customer-base grew, outsourcing printing proved to be time-consuming, expensive, and I had no control over the quality of the end-product. It became clear that I needed to invest in a printer and bring all the work in-house. I have used [the SG-540] for banners and posters, but as our main areas of business are vehicle graphics and signage, 90% of the time we are printing vinyl of some sort.”
With a new, exciting job always on the horizon, and every successful application posted across The Vinyl Guy’s social media channels for all to see, it’s easy to see how much the addition of an in-house printer has benefited Alex’s business; and will continue to increase profits and impress customers for years to come.

Hertfordshire-based Millharbour Digital has recently completed a branding project at Sushi Samba London to celebrate the UK STEM Awards 2017. Millharbour Digital printed and installed a wide array of temporary graphics on multiple surfaces at the venue using Arlon vinyl supplied by CMYUK, the UK’s leading independent supplier of digital print technology and materials.
Sponsored by The Telegraph, the awards offer STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) undergraduates the chance to prove their talent to some of the biggest names in industry, and offer them a chance to win £25,000. This year’s winner, electronic and electrical engineering student at the University of Strathclyde, Joe Gibson, designed a futuristic aircraft carrier in the BAE Systems-sponsored Defence Technology Challenge.
Based on the 38th and 39th floor of the Heron Tower in the City of London, Sushi Samba – which specialises in Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian cuisine – provided a stunning backdrop for the awards ceremony which took place on 16th June. The temporary graphics had to be installed just prior to the lunchtime event and removed cleanly as soon as the event concluded, allowing Sushi Samba to resume their day-today operations.
A four-person installation team from Millharbour Digital arrived at the venue at 6am on the morning of the event and all printed graphics had to be in situ by 11am.
Simon Beattie, account manager at Millharbour Digital, explains: “We needed to print and install the graphics in a very short timeframe and – having spoken to the team at CMYUK – Arlon 4300 DFP matte removable vinyl seemed to be the ideal solution.”
Arlon’s 90-micron DPF 4300 is an intermediate multi-purpose print media film featuring a removable adhesive. The Easy On, Easy Off features include a robust face film that is thick enough to be easily applied without an overlaminate, and the adhesive allows easy removal on a variety of standard surfaces including walls, windows and more. It offers flexibility and high opacity for covering previous graphics as well as providing good resistance to scuffing, tearing and abrasion to help protect graphics.
“We had to quickly install the printed graphics onto multiple – and sometimes challenging – surfaces, including mosaic walls, wooden facades, glass windows and painted walls. The Arlon material provided by CMYUK allowed us to do exactly that. Thanks to the flexibility of the film and its ultra low-tack formulation, we were able to stretch it around corners, cut it around plug sockets, and move it into position with ease.”
Simon Beattie continues: “Following the event, the customer was able to cleanly remove the printed materials without any damage to the surfaces onto which it had been applied. The feedback from our client was very positive. They said that the graphics looked fantastic – and professional – and helped to make the awards a real success.”
Robin East, Group Director at CMYUK, adds: “The team at Millharbour are always looking for innovative materials to add value for their clients. It’s great to see applications achieved from our materials – especially in one of my very favourite restaurants!”
A video of the graphics can be viewed at: https://youtu.be/df51JYJcI5M

A second Zünd digital cutting table has been installed at RMC Digital Print, after the signage and exhibitions graphics specialist encountered a bottleneck in its workflow.
The Hull business installed a Durst printer in January 2017, doubling its flatbed printing capacity, and immediately found it required additional cutting capabilities to honour contracts and keep the print-room running 24/7. Its finishing department already ran a Zünd G3 3XL1600 and decided to invest in a second Zünd machine, a Zünd G3 XL3200.
"We needed to act fast to deal with the bottleneck created by the new flatbed printer," explains Nicole Spencer, Operations Director at RMC Digital Print. "Zünd provided a really quick turnaround – about six weeks from ordering the G3 to its installation."
In addition to the potential of a faster installation and an easier pre-press workflow offered by choosing a second Zünd, RMC Digital wanted to replicate the reliability and precision demonstrated by its first Zünd machine.
"Our existing Zünd runs day and night so we knew reliability wouldn't be an issue if we bought another Zünd," says Nicole Spencer. "It also cuts very precisely: when cutting hoarding or back walls for interiors, for example, being half a millimetre out can make a big difference."
The Zünd G3 XL3200 can handle Dibond and ACM hoarding quickly thanks to its 1Kw Router module, while RMC Digital Print also upgraded its creasing tool to fold foam board or card material in on itself – a niche job for one of the company's customers.
"Our customers want fast turnarounds and often change deadlines so we have to move work around on our production schedule," says Nicole Spencer. "We have to react quickly to changes in demand so having the second Zünd allows us to pre-press the job just once and we know it will be finished accurately."
RMC Digital Print chose the Zünd G3 XL3200, a narrower but longer model than its first cutting table, which also has a conveyor to feed roll materials. The G3 can be tailored to specific cutting needs easily thanks to its modular construction and material handling options, making it a future-proofed cutting system ideal for a wide range of businesses across numerous industries. Its Swiss design exceeds safety standards and offers the highest automation capabilities, increasing output and minimising human error.
"The combination of Swiss manufacturing and a UK-based engineering team enabled Zünd UK to very quickly respond to RMC Digital Print's requirement for a reliable machine capable of the most accurate work," comments Stuart Cole, Managing Director, Zünd Plotting Systems (UK) Ltd.
"The Zünd G3 is simply designed and built for 24/7, precise operation for demanding customers, so we expect the business to significantly increase its output."
In May 2017, Zünd Plotting Systems (UK) Ltd became a subsidiary of Zünd Systemtechnik AG, a family business based in Switzerland, making the St Albans-based company an integral part of the manufacturer offering a full and complete service to its customers in the UK and Ireland.
For further information on Zünd cutting systems, or to book a visit to Zünd UK's dedicated demonstration suite, please email sales@zund.co.uk or call +44 (0)1727 833003.

They are accurately colour-matched to OEM inks in CMYK plus Light Cyan, Light Magenta and Light Black, and can be used in conjunction with Roland Eco Max 3 white and metallic inks.
In addition to the colour vibrancy provided as standard with Nazdar inks – which are manufactured in the UK and USA – the new low-odour Series 203 inks offer superior performance on outdoor graphics and are resistant to UV degradation and colour fade. The range is ideal for commonly used graphics substrates including banner material, flexible and pressure-sensitive vinyl, blue back paper and backed mesh, delivering consistent and reliable print performance even on high-speed printers.
"We promoted the new inks at FESPA in Hamburg this spring and we're delighted to now roll them out to wide-format print businesses across the UK," says Stephen Woodall, Global Market Segment Manager for Aqueous & Solvent Digital. "The high impact, high intensity colours offered by the new Nazdar 203 Series inks are equivalent to the OEM ink set but without the high price tag.
"Nazdar inks are formulated to match specific OEM inks, so print businesses can be assured that a quick ink changeover is all that's required to save them money without losing quality. The only difference their customers will see is lower prices."
Thanks to compatibility with both the ink shades and with all Roland printers engineered to Roland Eco Max 3 inks, the new Nazdar 203 Series cartridges can be installed simply when the old OEM inks run out, either singly or as a full set, without the need for custom profiles in most situations.
The new inks – available in 500ml cartridges and 1 litre bottles – are manufactured to ISO9001 standards and meet all the regulatory targets achieved by Eco Max 3 OEM inks.
