As PrintIT! Scotland gears up for its inaugural awards ceremony which will take place on 12th November 2010 at South Lanarkshire Council, Daniel Smith, PrintIT! 2010 winner from St Ives School in Cornwall was given a unique trip to see the next generation of print and imaging technologies at Canon Expo in Paris. In addition to other prizes awarded during the PrintIT! Awards Ceremony at Ipex 2010 in May, Daniel and his teacher were treated to the all expenses paid trip courtesy of Canon UK.
Wayne Barlow, Chairman of PrintIT!, and Director Professional Print at Canon Business Imaging Group comments, “Daniel’s entry in the PrintIT! Awards was exceptional, and he has shown real enthusiasm for the print industry. His trip to Canon Expo was the perfect way to reward the skill he has shown, while further revealing to him the ground-breaking industry which he may one day enter himself.”
With a huge range of current and future technologies on show, Daniel had the opportunity to experience the important role print plays in multiple vertical sectors, including the photographic and medical industries.
“Visiting Canon Expo 2010, as part of my PrintIT! prize, was a once in a lifetime experience,” says Daniel. “It has given me a real insight in to the print industry of the future, especially the amazing technologies that are being developed. It has shown me how the invention of products like augmented reality glasses, for example, will affect the role of designers which will in turn have a knock-on effect for the print industry. The whole experience has been an eye-opener and I have learnt so much.”
Daniel’s Design and Technology teacher at St Ives School, Cornwall, Gizela Daemi-Rashidi adds, “All of my students have benefitted enormously from the PrintIT! initiative and it has certainly been an amazing experience- especially for Daniel. Speaking as a teacher, it is heartening to be involved in an initiative which not only grabs, but holds the attention of the students, and I would encourage as many schools as possible to get involved in this fantastic competition. As for our trip to Canon Expo, I think I learnt almost as much as Daniel did. What a fantastic insight into an interesting and complex industry.”
